A guide to get a powerful Arcanine in HG
If you catch a growlithe in Heartgold it will become a very useful team member if you train it right. So I decided to make a guide to get a powerful Arcanine in HG.

First. I recommend catching Growlithe in route 36 like me. It will then be level 13 and it will be easy to train it from the beginning since it have som decent moves by then. If you want it to have good stats, you should catch one that has either Jolly or Quiet nature. Jolly nature will up it's speed and decrease it's Sp. ATK. While Quiet nature ups it's special attack and decreases its speed. While decreased speed is negative while it's a Growlithe it doesn't really matter when it evolves. Growlithe has either the Flash Fire ability or Intimidate ability. As I have tried both I find Flash Fire the more useful. As for the moves. At lv. 13 growlithe will most likely have these four moves:
Bite
Roar
Ember
Leer

At level 14 it'll learn Odor Sleuth, do not learn it this, as Leer is more useful.
Helping Hand that it learns at level 17 is not that important either, since it's not amny double battles in HG.
Lv. 20: Flame Wheel, now were talking, this is a powerful move that you can keep many levels. It has 60 atk. and 100 acc. Forget ember and learn Flame wheel.
5 levels later, at 25 it learns reversal. This attack gets more powerful the less HP the user has. And it's got 100 acc. Forget Roar and learn this.
Now Growlithe have the attacks, Bite, Reversal, Flame wheel and Leer.
But not for long, at level 28, Growlithe can learn Fire Fang. This has 65 atk. and 95 acc. Forget Leer and learn this.
At lv. 31 it can learn another powerful move, that damages the user. Take Down. This got 90 atk, and 85 acc. Forget Reversal, and learn this.
34: Flamethrower, a very powerful fire attack. with 95 atk, and 100 acc. Forget Firefang and learn this.
39 it learns Agility, you can choose yourself if you want to learn this or not, i didn't alyhough it could be pretty useful.
Finally at lv. 42 it learns Crunch, a move you always need. Forget Bite and learn this. It's the same as Bite only more powerful.
Then it learns Heat Wave at level 45 you can choose too keep this or Flamethrower, as they're very similar.
The last move Growlithe learn is Flare Blitz. Thats a powerful fire move. Forget Flame wheel And learn this.
Then it have Crunch, Take Down, Flare Blitz and Flamethrower.
Evolve it with a Fire Stone now, then you'll have an Arcanine.
Go to the move rememberer in Blackthorn city, give him a Heart Scale, and you can learn your Arcanine, Extremespeed. Forget Take Down, and learn Extremespeed.

Now if you followed the guide you'll have a powerful Arcanine with Flash Fire, Jolly or Quiet nature. With the moves Crunch, Extremespeed, Flamethrower n Flare Blitz.
This pokemon will help you, and will if you use it correctly become a must-have team member.

I hope this guide helped you, and please reply if you see something wrong, or you have another tip about what natures Growlithe should have.

Hmmm, i think you should forget either fire fang or bite for Agility. As take down and flamethrower is more useful.

Nice guide! Have any more? Like for a Ninetales, since Growlithe is a HG exclusive.

I may do this-I love Arcanine, but when I restart my Pokemon games(which I do all the time^^)I usually end up with about the same set of 6 Pokemon as last time. I need to try some new Pokemon. 8D

Yeah I might restart mine, I only have a Spikey eared pichu on it, since I can't transfer it over to B/w D:

And I might make a fire dominant team.

Nice guide, i just reastared and ill definitely be using this guide. Could i replace Crunch with Thunder Fang to cover his weakness to water types? Or is it not worth it because crunch is more powerful?

Well, Flamethrower and Flare Blitz have a 10% chance to burn, and this guy looks more like a PowerHouse murder machine than a subtle strategic killer. XD

Replace Flamethrower, Arcanine's Attack>Arcanine's Sp. Atk.
I suggest Thunder Fang. ^^
