Invisiblilty and Buddies

I was thinking about an option for people who are 'buddies' with another to be able to see if they're online, if they so choose.

If you want people to know you're online, just change away from invisible. Chances are the people you don't want to know you are online, don't want to talk to you anyways. I never got why people go invisible anyways, and this suggestion is just confuses me further. I thought the point of being invisible was for people not to know you're online.
