Midnight

Ch. 1
Alone

I felt my heart beat as if it were to spring out of my chest. I stared at the rubble that was once her single-story house with octagonal windows and the lilly in front of it.
" Well... at least.... it'll give me time to think."
A tear trickled down my cheek. I thought about what I said, I thought about what she said, what I would have said to her, but it was too late.
Late
The word rang in my head, like an annoying bell.
Late.....
For my brother's funeral, for my Mom's birthday. Too late to tell her. To warn her. It had always been my problem...
Late.
But I knew what to do.
For once in my life I knew what to do.
I had to find him.
The one who did this. The one who killed the only thing left on this earth I held dear to me.
The one who made me miserable.

Ch.2
Her

Just because I didn't get out much didn't mean she did the same.
She knew people. Which was surprising to me for such an innocent girl.
It was them who her into this mess.
It was at a starbucks in Los Angeles.
I guess that's where it began, that's where I met her.
That's where she introduced me to her friend. That's where I would see that friend again.
I walked in.
The place wasn't crammed with wannabe writers, all on their laptops, like most Starbucks are. It was filled with gangs and bikers.
And as usual, there was the same guy working at the counter.
He was an overweight man with a short beard and a beady eyes. It hadn't looked like he had bathed in weeks, and I still question why Starbucks would let a man who lead such a grotesque life-style work the front counter.
I saw the girl, Maria was her name.
" Gotta lot'a nerve com in down to this part of LA" she snickered, staring me up and down.
" I still wonder how you were friends with her." I said.
" Ey, that girl was like a daughter to me!"
"That girl was my girlfriend."
Maria calmed herself down, then sat down on a wooden chair.
" So what'dya wanna know, who did it?"
" I know who and why but I can't track down this guy alone"
" You are one crazy kid, you know that? You're tryin to take down a whole criminal organization with the worst'a the worst."
" If thats what it takes."
" Ya got guts, I'll see what' I can do. I'll get back to ya asap, kapeesh?"
"But.."
She left the store, drink in hand, and a grin on her face.
" Thanks."
